My First Bookcase
This post is about moving my Sister-in-Law . . . or rather its about a bookcase I moved for my Sister-in-Law. You see, this particular bookcase is the first piece of furniture I ever built.
I built it in high school with my now Wife. I honestly dont remember if we made it for my Wife and then it was passed to my Sister-in-Law or if we made it for my Sister-in-Law directly. Regardless my Sister-in-Law has had it for many years now and it is continuing to serve her well as she begins life as a college graduate.
The bookcase itself is not something I would have let out of my shop today. Its actually fabricated from a single sheet of 3/4" CDX plywood. The shelves are each attached with many brads and there is solid wood banding attached to the front (brads again) to hide the plies. As the CDX is so rough, it actually received a few coats of spackle before it was painted. It has now been painted so many time and so heavily that it is again rough textured.
Regardless of how it was built and how my construction techniques have changed Im still very proud of this bookshelf. It has served its function of reliably holding and organizing books for over a decade and it continues to do so. When it has served those I love for so long how could I not be proud?

My first workbench
I was going through some files on my computer and found a couple of pictures from when I built my first workbench a couple of years ago. I only had a cordless circular saw and a cordless drill at the time and it was my excuse to buy a mitre saw. I had zero woodworking experience and was determined to over engineer the hell out of it. I think that I used 13 - 2x4s on that one bench. Each leg is made out of 2 pieces of 2x4 that are screwed together in an L shape. I notched each one at the top and bottom by making a bunch of horizontal cuts with the circular saw and then cleaning them out with a chisel.
I have added lights under the shelf, moved the sprinkler timer, and added pegboard to the back wall and this is what it looks like now.

I live in Southern California and during the next earthquake I plan on hiding in there.
I had to redo the drawer twice before it worked right.

Whats in my Cabinets
Recently I got a Silhouette Cameo and Ive finally put it to use! A year or so ago I purchased a container for the flour and as odd as this sounds, I couldnt be happier with it. I know what you are thinking ... is she really that excited about a flour container? Well this one is perfect, it has a wide opening so I can measure and level the extra off without flour going everywhere. The top snaps on an off like a breeze and it also seals really well (its Food Network brand found at Kohls).
Anyways, I decided to invest in a few more containers that will hopefully make me equally happy, while organizing my mini pantry.
I love things organized, but I tend to get overwhelmed when I try to do it all at once, so Ive decided to tackle it little by little (like cabinet by cabinet little)
For now we just have a few cabinets devoted to our pantry (hopefully a full size one will be in the future next time we move!)
So I took everything out and decided where it should go and how it should be stored (moved somethings to another cabinet, and moved somethings in)

So I took everything out and decided where it should go and how it should be stored (moved somethings to another cabinet, and moved somethings in)
I moved these baskets from Ikea on top of the microwave, dont they fit perfectly there? They hold coffee/tea items and canned goods that I use on a regular basis for easy access. The jar to the right holds Annabelles treats, David gets up way to early for work and she always goes to the kitchen (half sleepy eyed, I hear) to get her treat while he eats breakfast. So having that within reach was important too!
I moved my flour container from another cabinet and put the vinegars and other like items on a lazy susan, which makes them so much easier to access!
I covered a few jars in tissue paper from a Kate Spade purchase and mod podge.
I found containers like my flour one at TJ Maxx, these were sold in a set of 6 that perfectly stack and are proportioned so that they are the same height. (They ended up being about $4 each)
I used the Silhouette Cameo to cut out these cut out a few labels ...
For the top shelf, I put lighter items (so it would be easier to get down) that I dont use very often ...
I covered a peacock blue bin found at Target for $2.50 with fun polka dot paper from World Market
to put medicine and vitamins in. Individually packaged mixes are next door in a plastic bin, but I would like to find something a little bigger to fill the space.
Such a big improvement! Im looking forward to tackling the other cabinets!
